Organizing Lessons from a TV Show

I went to a dual panel discussion of the creation of the third season of the multi-Emmy nominated TV series Only Murders in the Building Saturday night and high levels of organizing were everywhere.

First we heard from the experts who craft and shape the show including the show runner, make-up, costume and choreographer to name a few. Next we heard from those who prepare the shot material for broadcast including the composer, editor and yes, the show runner who is the god of the operation. He or she has a vision for the production and works with all the experts to bring them to one cohesive presentation. One that brings to life the show runner’s vision and incorporates the genius of each expert.

Next we were treated to a fun reception. The location was the Pacific Design Center known in Los Angeles as ‘The Blue Whale.’ A warm summer night allowed us to be outside enjoying food from 4 food trucks and desserts from 2 more. They also had an extraordinary DJ duo who literally rocked the patios with joy. I saw event organizers racing around with clip boards no doubt putting out fires we had no clue were burning. A reception this size is an undertaking that just like the show requires one person with vision and multiple organized individuals contributing their expertise. And guess what? Just like that trip you want to take, the holiday gift list you intend to prepare or that home you long to purchase, it’s all guided by a budget. I am in tune with organizing everywhere I go. In fact when things aren’t working well, I have been know to speak up, announce my profession and offer suggestions!

I always want you to take your organizing expertise out of the closet, the pantry or the garage and realize that your skill set has life application far beyond home projects. During these last weeks of summer, be on the look out for ways you see organized people in action. And yes, be on the lookout for when the event isn’t working very well. If you have read my New York Times best seller, taken any of my classes or simply followed me here on Substack, you have skills to offer. Where will you apply them this Fall? What skills do you need to hone? I’d love to know what’s going on with you so feel free to comment.

I have a surprise for you this Wednesday. A fun little gift that was born out of a suggestion I made in One Year to an Organized Life. Most organizers present these as one and done. I teach you how to tweak the basic template so that you are working with a guide that is tailor made to you.
